Clients quite rightly want to spend their time focussing on their business – not dealing with VAT matters! To minimise the time that clients have to spend on VAT, I always try to provide a super quick response to queries and to deal with compliance matters promptly with as little input from the client as possible, freeing them up to give their attention to what they really want to do.

I keep clients regularly informed of any work that I’m undertaking doing so that they are comfortable in the knowledge that their VAT obligations are in hand at all times. Having previously worked for HM Customs & Excise and HMRC, I am well equipped to provide clients with guidance on HMRC’s procedures, particularly in relation to the import duties and the penalty system. I advise many of the firm’s clients on matters relating to VAT compliance, and regularly provide guidance on partial exemption, land and property, construction and assist with tribunal matters, place of supply and charity issues.

At my previous firm, I provided specialist VAT advice to accountants and developed expertise in assisting overseas businesses selling through the internet. I joined Gerald Edelman in 2018, bringing 20 years’ experience in VAT compliance and planning, and having previously worked for HMRC on VAT fraud matters.

What one piece of advice would you give your 10-year-old self?

Carry on doing what you’re doing and you’ll be just fine. The future seemed like such a daunting prospect, and still does if I’m perfectly honest!

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

Dawn French – I’ve been compared to her for most of my adult life, so it would be nice to have a chat and see if we really are alike.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

The ability to fly like Superwoman – to be as free as a bird without a care in the world!

Who inspires you?

Anyone who campaigns peacefully and tirelessly in the pursuit of justice – they will always be an inspiration to me.
